A mental health training plan for men

Unfrozen: The 90-Day Reset for Men A Mental Health Training Plan and Guided Journal

Unfrozen is a 90-day mental health training plan and guided journal for men who look fine at work and feel anything but at home. Two pages a day, about ten minutes at the start: score yourself, tick a box, write a line, do one practice. Paperback, £14.99.

Unfrozen, a 90-day mental health training plan and guided journal for men: the cover in front of an open two-page day

Two pages a day.

A two-page day from the book, with the five daily steps: check in, read, practice, action and tonight's win

Every day follows the same five steps, so you always know what to do next.

Check in with how you slept and how you feel. Read a short page on what is going on and why. Practise one breathing, body or movement exercise, clearly illustrated. Take one small action out in the real world. Finish with tonight's win: a short prompt, different each day, to end on something that went right.

No experience needed. Every practice has clear steps and a drawing to follow, and every one finishes by settling you back down.

A mental health gift for a man who won’t ask for help

“I thought you might find this useful.”

That line is the whole conversation. Put the book where he will find it, in his work bag or by the kettle, and leave the rest to him.

What he writes in it stays between him and the page.

Ordering for Christmas? He could start on Boxing Day and finish on 25 March.

Why I wrote it.

Four illustrated practices from the book: hand on chest, shake it off, rooted and sing it out

I wrote this book for the man I used to be. Foggy, isolated and coping well enough that nobody asked how I was really doing. If anyone did ask, my answer was always the same: fine.

What got me out wasn’t a pep talk. It was simple, body-based practice: breathing, moving, shaking it off and paying attention to what my body had been holding for years. This book takes the gentlest parts of that work and turns them into a ninety-day plan you can follow at home, on your own. The deeper work happens in person, where I can keep you grounded while we go further.

It’s a paperback because you fill it in. You write in it, score yourself, tick things off and look back at how far you have come.

Never kept a journal?

Most men haven’t, and this book doesn’t ask you to start writing essays. Most days you score yourself, tick things off and write a line or two. Every practice has a drawing to follow. If you can fill in a timesheet, you can fill this in.

Six phases, ninety days.

How it’s different from other journals for men

Ninety days, in six phases. Each 15-day phase builds on the last, starting with sleep, food and breath before it asks anything bigger of you.

Something to do every day. A practice and a real-world action as well as a question, so the change happens off the page too.

Body first. Breathing, movement and shaking it off, each with a drawing to follow. Who shouldn’t do this explains when to check with your doctor first.

Built for sceptics. A man’s guide to the woo woo rates eleven alternative therapies by the evidence, so you can skip anything you don’t buy.

Help built in. A safety page with UK helplines, a plan for bad nights, and honest help when coping slips into drink, drugs or gambling.

A paperback on purpose. There’s no Kindle edition, because you write in it.

Written in Preston, for UK readers, by a bloke who spent years saying “fine” when he wasn’t.

Questions

Plain answers about the book.

What’s Unfrozen: The 90-Day Reset for Men?
It’s a 90-day mental health training plan and guided journal for men, written by Richard Porter. Each day takes two pages: a check-in, a short read, one breathing, body or movement practice, one small action and a win to end the day. It’s a 282-page paperback, published in the UK in 2026.
Who is it for?
Men who are running on empty, stuck in their heads, burnt out or tired of saying they are fine when they aren’t. You don’t need to be in crisis, and you don’t need any experience of breathwork, meditation or journalling.
How long does it take each day?
About ten minutes to start. Some practices take longer as the weeks go on, but every day fits on two pages.
What if I miss a day?
Pick up where you left off. Don’t start again and don’t give yourself a hard time. Missing a day doesn’t count as failing.
What are the best guided journals for men in the UK?
For a man who’d never keep a diary, look for structure over blank prompts. Unfrozen gives him a 90-day plan, something to do each day and UK help when things slip. If he’d rather just list what he’s grateful for, a simpler prompt journal may suit him better.
Will he actually use it?
The first fortnight is about sleep, food and breath, not feelings. Day one takes about ten minutes, and there are no essays. Most days are a score, a tick and a line.
Is it a replacement for therapy?
No. It isn’t therapy, and it doesn’t replace help from your GP or a mental health professional. If you’re in immediate danger, call 999 or go to A&E. For urgent mental health help, call NHS 111 and choose option 2, call Samaritans on 116 123 or text SHOUT to 85258.
Are the breathing practices safe?
They’re gentle, and every one finishes by settling you down. Stop if you feel dizzy, tingly or panicky, and breathe normally. If you have a heart condition, epilepsy, high blood pressure or a serious mental health condition, check with your doctor first.
Is there a Kindle or ebook version?
No. It’s a paperback on purpose, because you write in it every day.
Where can I buy it?
On Amazon UK. Use the Buy on Amazon button on this page, or search Amazon for Unfrozen: The 90-Day Reset for Men.
How is it different from a diary or notebook?
A notebook is blank. Unfrozen tells you what to do each day: check in, read a short page, do one practice, take one small action and finish on a win.
Is it a good gift for a man who’s struggling?
It can be, if it comes without pressure. Leave it where he’ll find it and let him choose when to start. If you think he’s in danger right now, call 999 or go to A&E. For someone to talk to, Samaritans are on 116 123, free, day or night.

Day one is tonight.
